I wrote Fossil Light for an orchestration workshop in graduate school back in 2010-11.  The title was inspired by a line in a book where the author referred to starlight as "Fossil Light." Each movement depicts a different viewpoint of the light: the bold, intense sight at the source of the star, the faint, ages-old dots we see in the sky, and the traveling of the light particles in between.  ​Though score and parts are unfortunately unavailable, I'm always up for a commission! About the Work

 

I completed Steps for tenor saxophone and wind ensemble in 2015.  At that point in time, Steps was the second movement of a two-movement work, That Takes Care 'a That (silly name for a dissertation!). Since then, I have decided to turn it into a stand-alone piece.  Below, you'll find the original score and sample recordings. Though revisiting a work that is a few years old can be a daunting task for a composer, there are some moments in Steps that I'm truly excited about developing more.  My goal is to complete the work by 2025. ​

 

Are you a saxophonist, conductor, or member of an ensemble that would be interested in being part of the process and premiere? Das Wunder des wandelnden Fisches ist eine Geschichte über die Verwandlung der Liebe und dreht sich um einen Jungen, der Todos Santos, eine Stadt in Baja California voller Kunsthandwerker, Künstler und sogar Auswanderer aus Nordamerika, verlässt, um seinen Vater in Kalifornien zu finden. Doch anstatt seinen Vater zu finden, trifft der Junge in Los Feliz ein peruanisches Mädchen und verliebt sich in sie. Zusammen nehmen sie einen Bus nach Santa Monica, verbinden sich am Strand mit jedem ihrer Heimatländer und werfen dann die Zwillingssteine des Jungen zurück in den Pazifischen Ozean.  Dies ist der Beginn ihres neuen gemeinsamen Lebens als zwei Amerikaner, die in einer Stadt des Neuanfangs leben.


Das Wunder des wandelnden Fisches Entstanden aus dem Kurs „Autor und Komponist“ an der USC, der gemeinsam von den Professoren Frank Ticheli und David St. John unterrichtet wird. Zwei der Lieder wurden im Frühjahr 2010 aufgeführt und sowohl Jackson Bliss (Schreibstudentin) als auch Laura Kramer (Kompositionsstudentin) setzten ihre Zusammenarbeit nach Abschluss des Kurses fort. Bis zum Sommer 2011 waren insgesamt zwölf Lieder und vier Gitarreneinlagen vollständig fertiggestellt, am 24. September 2011 wurde das Werk uraufgeführt.


Das Wunder des wandelnden Fisches wurde 2012 mit dem BMI Student Composer Award ausgezeichnet.
