I wrote Fossil Light for an orchestration workshop in graduate school back in 2010-11.  The title was inspired by a line in a book where the author referred to starlight as "Fossil Light." Each movement depicts a different viewpoint of the light: the bold, intense sight at the source of the star, the faint, ages-old dots we see in the sky, and the traveling of the light particles in between.  ​Though score and parts are unfortunately unavailable, I'm always up for a commission! About the Work

 

I completed Steps for tenor saxophone and wind ensemble in 2015.  At that point in time, Steps was the second movement of a two-movement work, That Takes Care 'a That (silly name for a dissertation!). Since then, I have decided to turn it into a stand-alone piece.  Below, you'll find the original score and sample recordings. Though revisiting a work that is a few years old can be a daunting task for a composer, there are some moments in Steps that I'm truly excited about developing more.  My goal is to complete the work by 2025. ​

 

Are you a saxophonist, conductor, or member of an ensemble that would be interested in being part of the process and premiere? Note de programme


Un motif de moiré est un motif d'interférence en art et en mathématiques qui est créé lorsqu'une image est superposée avec une autre image semi-transparente similaire. Les motifs résultants peuvent varier lors de la modification du degré de rotation de la deuxième image.  Dans le premier mouvement,Formes dégradées, j'ai imaginé diverses figures se chevauchant, se tordant et se transformant en de nouvelles.  À grande échelle, le mouvement est une bataille entre stabilité et instabilité, semblable à la façon dont la distorsion peut entrer et sortir lors de la rotation des images selon un motif de moiré. Le livre est terminé sur des tons posés, mais au milieu, il entreprend un voyage d'interférence et de restructuration. La stabilité tente de revenir, mais elle est stoppée par des vagues de hauteurs désaccordées, des passages de type canonique et de nouveaux modèles émergents.  Le deuxième mouvement,Griffonner, continue d'explorer des modèles changeants.  Des harmonies étranges planent et se tissent comme des images superposées et griffonnées qui s'agitent lentement, mais elles se transforment également en grooves rapides qui changent constamment.

J'ai écrit cette œuvre pour mes étudiants du Six Four Quartet à Cal Poly à San Luis Obispo, en Californie, et je suis ravi que nous ayons pu la présenter en première à la conférence 2019 de la région 2 de la NASA !
